The most recent project where we provided a formal Ecological Clerks of Works service was during the build of the Machrihanish Dunes golf course in 2007. On other jobs (see below) there was a project ecologist role during the construction phase but none so comprehensive as at Machrihanish probably because it is a Site of Scientific Interest.
It involved close working with those on site including:
staking out areas to be protected from access during the build
agreeing irrigation routes and construction/haul routes
agreeing golf locations on the ground with the course designer
locations for every tee, green, bunker and fairway
matching lifted turf to receptor sites which were being reinstated
finding suitable turf from adjoining air base for tee banks etc
finding suitable sources of sand for raising tees and greens
sourcing wild seed for fairways and rabbit damage
agreeing golf paths and maintenance routes with green staff
working with green staff to find solutions to problems
short action lists after each visit
ongoing liaison with SNH
There were fortnightly visits at the beginning and end of the construction phase and weekly visits for the 4 summer months. Thereafter one visit a month for a year, also to prepare management plan.
Recently we've had a project ecologist role during construction phase at:
